The Moderating Role of Digital Communication Between Project Complexities and Knowledge Management Towards Project Performance

Abstract

This research investigates the moderating influence of digital communication on the connection between project complexities (both task and information complexity) and knowledge management, along with their combined effect on project performance within the construction sector. A quantitative methodology was employed, utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM) to gather data from 538 construction industry professionals in Pakistan. The results indicate that both task complexity (β = 0.254) and information complexity (β = 0.211) have a positive effect on project performance, contradicting the traditional belief that complexity automatically hinders success. Instead, when effectively managed through digital communication tools, complexity can foster innovation and enhance efficiency. Sharing knowledge (KS) greatly boosts project outcomes (β=0.318) by connecting complexity and success. Digital communication further enhances this impact (β=0.402-0.428), with tools that facilitate real-time collaboration, decrease information overload, and enhance decision-making. The research emphasizes that combining digital communication (DC) with knowledge sharing (KS) turns project challenges into competitive advantages. It recommends that construction companies implement digital technologies and promote KS to boost their performance. Additionally, the study broadens the theories of TAM and IPT by illustrating the significant role of DC in overseeing complex projects.
