Linguistic Layers of Laughter: A Multilevel Analysis of Humor in Urdu Jokes

Abstract

This study explores the construction of humor in Urdu jokes by analyzing them through semantic, pragmatic, syntactic and sociocultural aspects of the language. One of the main aims is to study how every level of language adds humor, discover the hidden social and cultural parts and uncover similar language forms commonly used in Urdu humor. A selection of 40 jokes in Urdu was generated by collecting them from public sites such as Google, Facebook and Instagram. Using qualitative principles, the data was personally transcribed and reviewed closely both thematically and linguistically. A data-driven method was used which let the analysis reveal patterns naturally. The analysis found that humor in Urdu humor depends heavily on words with different meanings, uncommon uses of language and familiar expressions. Strategies such as swapping between languages, using familiar phrases and mentioning traditionally recognized ideas are important to the humor. People are able to release forbidden thoughts, hidden irritation and social anxiety by laughing over jokes like these. In terms of cultural meaning, they give insight into the ways society treats gender, social positions and differences among generations. All in all, the study proves that Urdu jokes have greater value than mere entertainment, displaying original ways of expressing ideas, group mindsets and cultural knowledge of those who speak Urdu.
