Withdrawal of US and NATO Forces from Afghanistan: Development and Security Situation in Afghanistan

Abstract

According to an agreement reached between the United States and the Taliban in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on 29 February 2020, the United States and its allies will withdraw troops from Afghanistan in 14 months, and no action will be taken by the Taliban during this period. This article focuses on the consequences of the US troop withdrawal and the real facts that will help predict Afghanistan's future. This article discusses US engagement in Afghanistan, particularly the withdrawal within a 14-month period. The United States and NATO must eliminate Osama bin Laden and the Al-Qaeda terrorist network from Afghanistan, remove the Taliban from power, and bring stability to Afghanistan and establish a democratic state. This article will analyse the current security environment in Afghanistan as the conflict escalates and expands geographically, resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement, as Afghan National Security Forces respond to insurgent groups' efforts. On April 14, 2021, the United States announced its plan to withdraw all of its troops from Afghanistan on September 11 of this year, effectively ending the longest war in American history. This decision was made after nearly two decades of fighting the Taliban and trying to establish a democratic government in Afghanistan. The withdrawal of US and NATO forces raises concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan. The Taliban, with the support of regional actors, has recently shown a resurgence in its power and control over territories, raising fears of a potential civil war after the US and NATO forces leave.
