Abstract

The global environmental crisis has highlighted the need for deeper engagement with ecological sustainability. Language plays a crucial role in shaping how societies conceptualize and respond to environmental issues. Amidst scientific, technological, and policy-oriented efforts to address ecological degradation, the often-overlooked role of language emerges as a powerful force in shaping environmental thought and action. This research demonstrates that specific linguistic strategies—such as eco-centric framing, constructive metaphors, and inclusive narratives—can significantly influence environmental awareness, attitudes, and behaviors. Through an analysis of various linguistic structures and communication patterns across media, education, activism, and corporate discourse, the study identifies how narratives, metaphors, frames, and discourses either perpetuate ecological harm or promote sustainable mindsets. It finds that anthropocentric and extractive language frameworks often hinder ecological engagement, while relational and empathetic language fosters stewardship, interdependence, and environmental responsibility. Furthermore, the study reveals the manipulative nature of greenwashing in corporate discourse and underscores the empowering role of digital activism and eco-linguistic hashtags in shaping collective ecological identity. Language is shown not as a passive medium but as an active agent in shaping environmental consciousness and action. The research ultimately calls for the adoption of eco-linguistic strategies to inspire deeper ecological empathy, foster ethical engagement with nature, and promote systemic change through transformed linguistic landscapes.
