Abstract

This paper focuses on the effects of free writing on the creativity, fluency, and the confidence and cognitive engagement of students. The quantitative survey research design was applied to collect data by undertaking a structured survey using 40 students of the university and was analyzed using a descriptive analysis method. The results indicate that free writing enhances fluency, lessens writer block such as inhibition and impediment and improves confidence, articulateness, and critical thinking. Still, its impact on creativity is neither strong nor high and most students still have product-oriented habits, i.e., focused on grammar. The results of the study are that despite being a useful but limited method an effective use of free writing needs to be structured, receiving feedback and be integrated in coordination with other instructional techniques to ensure the best outcome.
